Bartok and Kodaly - SCO - Gramophone Awards Issue
Sir Charles Mackerras emphasises the dance elements in these three scores and, in doing so, creates a most appealing programme. He uses a smallish ensemble which responds evocatively to his approach. He paints the Bartók score with rich colours and draws forth some splendidly rhythmic energy. But he can also tap into the mysterious, otherworldly qualities of the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. If you like your Bartók spiky and abrasive, this may not be for you; but there's something very inviting about the warmth Mackerras casts over this music, a warmth aided by Linn's well-handled recording.
