Concerto Caledonia - Colin's Kisses - What's On In London
This Linn debut from Scottish early music group Concerto Caledonia provides a fascinating insight into the music of Scottish baroque composer James Oswald. Formed in 1992, Concerto Caledonia brings together some of Scotland's finest period instumentalists who have forged an enviable reputation for themselves through their numerous festival appearances and radio broadcasts. they are joined by two internationally-renowned soloists, Catherine Bott and Iain Paton.
Born a village musician's son, Oswald ascended the ranks of musical society to become a chamber composer to George III, yet we know remarkably little of the man or his music and many of the works presented here have never been recorded before. Much of Oswald's music has its source in Scottish traditional music of which he was one of the greatest gatherers.
The programme on this album features love songs, instrumental pieces and assorted miniatures, which all display Oswald's unique ability to mix melodic beauty, musical convention, elegant satire and traditional tunes with consummate grace and refinement.
