BBC Music Magazine's Classical Albums Of 2020
Recordings by Phantasm, Dunedin Consort & the Scottish Chamber Orchestra are chosen.
We are proud to announce Retrospect Trio, Retrospect Ensemble and Phantasm have all been nominated for an International Classical Music Award. The awards will be announced at a gala ceremony and concert on 15th May in Nantes, France.
Retrospect Trio have been nominated for their second album of Purcell: 'Twelve Sonatas in Three Parts'. The album was named 'Chamber Disc of the Month' by BBC Music Magazine and was named 'Outstanding' by International Record Review. Early Music Review stated: "I have a feeling this recording might bring Linn another award to put on their mantelpiece. It certainly ought to" - perhaps it will be an ICMA!
Retrospect's second nomination is for the Ensemble's recording of 'JS Bach Easter and Ascension Oratorios' which features a host of singing stars including Carolyn Sampson (soprano), Iestyn Davies (countertenor), James Gilchrist (tenor) and Peter Harvey (bass). The Times described this recording as "a disc to make your heart leap." The album was a Finalist in the 2011 Gramophone Awards, maybe it can go one better and win at the ICMAs.
Phantasm's nomination is for their album 'William Byrd: Complete Consort Music' which has already been named 'Editor's Choice' in Gramophone, been awarded a 'Golden Diapason d'Or' by Diapason and was a Finalist at the 2011 Gramophone Awards. BBC Music Magazine described the recording as "flawless" as well as giving the disc five stars and naming it 'Disc of the Month'.
We wish all the nominees the best of luck with their well deserved nominations.
