An 'Indispensable' Mozart Recording
Natasha Loges names Mackerras' Mozart as one of five indispensable recordings of his music
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Sir Charles Mackerras' critically acclaimed recording of ‘Mozart Symphonies 38 - 41' has been named as one of the 20 great recordings of the past 20 years by BBC Music Magazine. The recordings are listed in the September 2012 issue which marks the 20th anniversary of the publication. The SCO and Sir Charles have been chosen for 2008's choice and appear alongside other landmark recordings such as Murray Perahia's ‘Goldberg Variations', Julia Fischer's ‘J. S. Bach Sonatas and Partitas' and the LSO's recent release of ‘Romeo and Juliet' with Valery Gergiev.
The much-loved recording has received many awards and plaudits since its release in February 2008 including being named ‘Disc of the Year' at the 2009 BBC Music Awards and receiving the ‘Critic's Award' at the 2009 Classical BRIT Awards. In their original review BBC Music Magazine stated: ‘These performances are so exhilarating that I listened to all four symphonies straight through at a first hearing, mesmerised by the variety and intensity of the music itself, sounding here completely fresh, and the virtually flawless renderings by the excellent Scottish Chamber Orchestra, with Sir Charles Mackerras at his most penetrating.'
