Rory Macdonald & RSNO - Thomas Wilson: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 - The Sunday Times
Wilson was an eminent Scot, and two of these scores were written for big Scottish occasions: Symphony No 4, “Passeleth Tapestry” (1988), for the 500th anniversary of Paisley; Carillon (1990) for the opening of Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. Each ciphers a theme from letters in the place name, and the symphony’s striking opening section is itself an inventive carillon. Wilson’s is a big, eclectic style, and the performances are arresting.
