In The Studio: Fitzwilliam String Quartet
Following the release of its Fiftieth Anniversary Recording of Shostakovich’s Last Three Quartets, the Fitzwilliam String Quartet is back in the studio this week to record two Schubert quartets on gut strings: the Quartet in G major D.887 and the Quartetsatz in C minor D.703.
The Quartet in G major D.887 is the composer’s last quartet and is particularly expressive and full to the brim with Schubertian characteristics. The Quartetsatz in C minor D.703, like the “Unfinished” Symphony, is incomplete, but is equally important in the composer’s legacy. Never performed in his lifetime, the quartet fragment is a lyrical embodiment of Schubert’s soul and a forerunner of the late, great string quartets.
Look out for this recording in 2021!
