Phantasm - J.S. Bach: The Well-Tempered Consort – II - Grey Panthers

Ancora un programma all’insegna della metamorfosi. Bisogna riconoscere à Phantasm – premiatissimo consort di viole creato da ormai già più di un quarto di secolo da Laurence Dreyfus – il coraggio dell’impresa: arrangiare per il suono affascinante ma onirico, elusivo, al limite dell’equivoco, delle viole da gamba alcuni dei capolavori che Johann Sebastian Bach ha scritto per strumenti a tastiera, dal Clavicembalo ben temperato (che suggerisce il titolo dei cd) all’Offerta musicale ed alla III Teil der Clavier-Übung.

Cosa diventano le austere, cristalline o monumentali architetture polifoniche tracciate dal clavicembalo, dal clavicordo o dall’organo? Eccole animarsi di personaggi e di luci nuove, come se le dimensioni si moltiplicassero in una fantomatica allucinazione, visitata dai personaggi delle antiche tradizioni inglesi delle Fantaisies e dell’In nomine.

Dopo un primo cd consacrato come Chamber Choice dal BBC Music Magazine e premiato come «registrazione eccezionale» da Diapason – Phantasm ha reiterato quest’anno con un secondo volume, più particolarmente dedicato ai due volumi del Clavicembalo ben temperato.

Another programme devoted to metamorphosis. Phantasm - the award-winning viol consort created more than a quarter of a century ago by Laurence Dreyfus - must be credited with the courage of a daring feat: arranging some of the masterpieces written by Johann Sebastian Bach for keyboard instruments, from the Well-Tempered Clavier (which suggests the title of the CDs) to the Musical Offering and the III Part of the Clavier-Übung, for the fascinating but dreamlike and elusive sound of the viola da gamba. 

What becomes of the austere, crystalline or monumental polyphonic architectures traced out by the harpsichord, clavichord or organ? Here they come alive with new characters and flashes of light, as if the dimensions were multiplying in a mysterious hallucination, visited by the characters of the ancient English traditions of Fantaisies and In nomine.

After a first CD hailed as Chamber Choice by BBC Music Magazine and praised as " an exceptional recording" by Diapason - Phantasm has repeated the success this year with a second volume, more particularly dedicated to the two volumes of the Well-Tempered Clavier.
