The Japanese technique of repairing pottery with gilded lacquer - thus highlighting wear and tear - is a metaphor for human growth, represented via a splattered and clawed canvas both in Clyne's album artwork and Capperauld's score. The RSNO's principal flautist Katherine Bryan is the soloist and dedicatee; the initial piercing single note shatters into melodic shards that are brought together as the work progresses.
