Barb Jungr - Waterloo Sunset - Jazz at Ronnie Scott's
Having established herself as one of Europe's most distinctive voices with her sensitive, intelligent versions of songs by everyone from Jacques Brel (Chanson The Space In Between AKD 129) to Bob Dylan (Every Grain Of Sand AKD 187), Barb Jungr confirms her reputation as a peerless interpreter of the classic modern song with this, her third album for Linn. Two more Dylan songs, High Water and Like A Rolling Stone, are - for their originality and power (the latter replacing Dylan's splenetic howl with a sympathetic enquiry) - worth the admission price alone, but Jungr also pays deeply rewarding, thought-provoking visits to Richard Thompson (The Great Valerio), the Everly Brothers (Cathy's Clown) and Ray Davies (Waterloo Sunset) as well as performing, with a lean, tasty band, three stimulating originals. Running the stylistic gamut from rock to jazz, with traces of western swing and folk thrown in along the way, Waterloo Sunset provides more evidence in favour of the Pink Paper's assertion that 'Jungr is now a fully fledged English Piaf'.
