Perfect Houseplants - Snap Clatter - Birmingham Post
A Huw Warren tune might add Satie to the Debussy and revel influences beloved of jazz composers but, like that of another Francophile, Frederick Delius, his music still comes out sounding quintessentially british. The change of label does not signal a great change of tack from the quartet: Saxophonist Mark Lockheart still writes bouncy, rhythmic songs summed up here by titles like Rag or Strictly For Dancing. Bassist Dudley Phillips still takes a gentle pastoral approach; and Martin France still plays pretty drums.
The performances are heartfelt but its the writing of Warren that draws the most attention.
