Vibraciones del Alma - Maximiliano Martin - Scotland on Sunday
Spanish clarinettist Maximiliano Martín demonstrates what "virtuoso" means in this exciting album of works by a variety of composers.
The changes of pace and feeling come swiftly enough, so if John McCabe's 1964 Three Pieces For Clarinet And Piano doesn't appeal, the strong partnership between clarinet and piano in Carl Maria von Weber's Grand Duo Concertant or a grandly constructed Introduction Et Rondo from Charles-Marie Widor more than repay the listening. Two works by Spanish composers Miguel Yuste and Antonio Romero reveal a strong Iberian tradition, while Rabaud's Solo De Concours is perhaps the best-known work here.
Throughout, Martín is accompanied by pianist Scott Mitchell, who advances and retreats in the soundscape with ease and skill.
