Retrospect Ensemble - Bach: Harpsichord Concertos - Hi-Fi News
These concerto performances directed by Matthew Halls, using a Ruckers/Hemsch-style two-manual harpsichord, are given with just five strings and (in BWV1057) two recorders. This, of course, is Bach's reworking of the Fourth Brandenburg; BWV1058 is an adapted violin concerto. We have the ubiquitous D-minor (BWV1052) in a version that tingles with vitality and thoughtfulness - a far cry from the hair-shirt Helsinki version reviewed last November. Good sound via Philip Hobbs; the clarity and presence are especially remarkable with the 24/192 download if you can access that.
