Liane Carroll - Seaside - London Evening Standard
London-born Carroll lives down by the beach in Hastings, finding inspiration in the salty air, cawing gulls and strolls along the promenade. On this, her ninth studio album, the singer-pianist pays homage to life by the coast with a series of bittersweet covers and originals performed with such longstanding collaborators as saxophonist Julian Siegel and trumpet player James McMillan, who produces. Opening with a title track penned by fellow Hastings resident Joe Stilgoe, Carroll sends her big, warm voice swinging through ‘Almost Like Being In Love' and the Morecambe and Wise theme, ‘Bring me Sunshine'. There's soul here, too, on a version of ‘Mercy Now' by Mary Gauthier; a sensitive take on Alison Krauss's already fragile ‘Get Me Through December' is set to prompt oceans of tears.
