Trevor Pinnock - Journey - The Observer
Inspired by the journey of the Spanish composer Antonio de Cabezón around Europe, Trevor Pinnock has assembled a quirky and intensely personal collection spanning two centuries of music and revisiting his career: Byrd and Bull pieces he discovered when he was 13, Bach's lyrical Sixth French Suite and Handel's great G major Chaconne, rounded off with a trilogy of Scarlatti sonatas. At the recital's heart is a wonderfully wistful account of Sweelinck's deeply touching variations on Mein junges Leben hat ein End, as if Pinnock is bidding farewell to his creative performing life - but let's hope there is more to come from this supremely musical player.
