Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique - SCO & Ticciati - Hi-Fi News
Appointed SCO music director in 2009, Robert (sic) Ticciati is embarking on a Berlioz series for Linn. You can see him a couple of years earlier, then 24, in the Barenboim lectures ‘School For The Ear' [YouTube] where at one point he is told ‘Your wonderful talent is also your problem: you try to do everything in every bar. It can be episodic.' But in the symphony here (repeats observed but no extra cornets in ‘Un bal') any tempo change or dynamic that might surprise you will be found to reflect absolute fidelity to the score. Ticciati's is very much a version to hear - not least for those finely graded wind solos in ‘Scene aux champs', where the oboist was up in the Usher Hall grand circle.
