Concerto Caledonia - Oswald: Colin's Kisses - Gramophone

The versatile Broadside Band, directed by Jeremy Barlow, continues its exploration of British 17th-and 18th-century repertoire concentrating here upon a particularly fascinating figure, the Scottish composer and music publisher James Oswald (1711-69). Apart from using several noms de plume (includig 'David Rizzio', a reference to Mary Queen of Scts's secretary) and being a central figure in London's secret composer's society. 'The Temple of Apollo', it has often been suggested that Oswald was the author of the first published version of God Save the King in the Thesaurus Musicus of  1744. Also, Oswald's collection of favourite Scottish tunes, the Caledinian Pocket Companion (c1745-65), provided a wealth of source material for composers such as bach.
