IBO & Peter Whelan - Mr Charles the Hungarian - BBC Radio 3 'Record Review'
That was the sound of the Irish Baroque Orchestra directed by Peter Whelan … it’s from a, well I suppose I could call it a, speculative restoration of Hungarian horn virtuoso Mr Charles’s benefit concert from Dublin in 1742, including a stirring performance of Handel’s Water Music in a suite edited by Walsh, horns blaring and rasping as they surely must have done in Charles Vernsberg’s hands. The album’s called Mr Charles the Hungarian. Handel’s Rival in Dublin. It sounds wonderful actually.
