Joe Stilgoe - Songs On Film: The Sequel - Daily Business Group (Live Review)
Film fan Stilgoe wows with all that jazz
Not being a particular fan of Richard Stilgoe I have to admit that I wasn't sure I would enjoy this show by his son Joe. How wrong I was to pre-judge hint.
As the lights dimmed and his talented fingers skipped across the unusually small grand piano it was clear that I was in the presence of something special. I was hooked.
Film buff Joe and his two man ensemble, one on bass, and the other on drums, treated the audience to an hour of breathtaking musicianship, as they applied their jazz interpretations to some of the most memorable film scores from the 1980's, such as the classic films of Tarantino, Tati, and Pixar.
This was nothing but an hour of jaw-dropping pure jazz talent front all three musicians. They interspersed songs with story telling and explained how they had met at Jazz School in London and had decided to come together to perform some of their favourite film music.
For me the highlight of the night was the three of them standing front stage without their instruments, and performing a piece using voices, hands, and a few props. Just stunning. Highly recommended. I would imagine that tickets will become hard to get. I visited on a Tuesday when the Fringe is offering 2 for 1 deals.
Grab this while you can and be prepared to be delighted in so many different ways.
