Joe Stilgoe - Songs On Film: The Sequel - In Tune International
I obviously missed out on Joe Stilgoe's previously-released same-titled movie song collection but this time around SONGS ON FILM -THE SEQUEL (Linn AKD 577) winged my way. I was quite impressed with the singer's refreshing jazzy take on his personal choice headed by self-composed WHAT'S ON? with THE RHYTHM OF LIFE (SWEET CHARITY), RAINBOW CONNECTION (MUPPETS MOVIE), FALLING SLOWLY (ONCE) and ARTHUR'S THEME (ARTHUR) augmented by Curtis Stigers' guest vocals on IF I DIDN'T HAVE YOU (MONSTERS lNC.). Certainly, Joe's jazzy arrangements well fit his jazz trio with himself on piano as well as vocals assisted by bassist Tom Farmer and drummer Ben Reynolds and I particularly enjoyed WEST SIDE STORY's COOL as well as a 1980s MEDLEY which along with FOOTLOOSE brings Joe's individualistic spin to its conclusion.
