There are jewels among this sombre, deeply felt selection, not least the indulgent melancholy of Sieben Lieder (Op. 48), on loves lost, betrayed and mourned, inflected with folkish idioms. The whole is satisfyingly put together ... Martineau is at his excellent best throughout.
