The Nightingale and the Butterfly - Pamela Thorby & Elizabeth Kenny - Classical Music Magazine
I do find this ‘whole-package' conception of marketing a CD (subtle, nuanced and graceful repertoire of the French baroque is gathered under an apt title suggesting both soaring flight and shimmering wings, and mirrored in aesthetically coherent photography) very engaging. Some illuminating musings from Kenny on performing French music in the liner notes, too, and Thorby plays three recorders by the late, great Fred Morgan - a very great treat to listen to. There are moments when I longed for just a little more opulence of recorder tone, but Couperin's Le Rossignol Vainqueur, particularly, is delicious, bubbling along joyously. Kenny's playing is absolutely first-rate, by turns glistening and casting shadow.
