Biography
Duo Pleyel takes its name from Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya and Richard Egarr’s pet piano – a beautiful instrument made in 1848 by Chopin’s preferred maker, Pleyel. The Duo has been working for the past three years to bring the rich and exciting repertoire for piano four-hands to a wider public. It is particularly committed to providing mixed programmes ranging from the earliest music by Johann Christian Bach and Mozart, mixed with that by lesser-known early Romantics such as Hummel and Dussek, through to the great popular works by Fauré, Debussy and Ravel in the twentieth century.
Reviews
'... the fugues on this CD fascinate with bold harmonies, sometimes almost approaching Max Reger, and the original "Grande Sonate" op. 48 develops some depth, especially in the Larghetto.'
Piano News
'Richard Egarr and Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya are superb advocates blending virtuosity and understated elegance in performances that truly inhabit the music.'
BBC Music Magazine
'Accustomed to Egarr's achievements at the helm of the Academy of Ancient Music ... this four-hand disc reaffirms his mastery of music that crosses the threshold of the 1800s, as well as his admirable rapport with Nepomnyashchaya ...'
Scherzo
‘… played with panache and enthusiasm by the duo on their Pleyel (of course) of 1848.’
