Biography
Duo Pleyel takes its name from Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya and Richard Egarr’s pet piano – a beautiful instrument made in 1848 by Chopin’s preferred maker, Pleyel. The Duo has been working for the past three years to bring the rich and exciting repertoire for piano four-hands to a wider public. It is particularly committed to providing mixed programmes ranging from the earliest music by Johann Christian Bach and Mozart, mixed with that by lesser-known early Romantics such as Hummel and Dussek, through to the great popular works by Fauré, Debussy and Ravel in the twentieth century.
Reviews
'Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya and Richard Egarr personify style without pedantry ... their gallantry, caprice and intimacy come as a breath of fresh air.'
International Piano
'The transparency and varied tonal colours of the Pleyel are particularly effective in the D951 Rondo, which they imbue with plenty of charm ...'
Gramophone
Choice: '... joined-at-the-heart-and-hip duetting which captures with equal success the pained, sharp-edged turbulence heard in that final “Lebensstürme”, and the smiling-through-tears delicacy you get in the Sonata in B flat.'
Only The Music
'Under their fingers, smiles tighten and the "storms of life" take over, which will frustrate the supporters of a more mellifluous Schubert, but is not a contradiction in terms.'
