In The Studio: Peter Whelan
Peter Whelan is back in the studio with the highly popular Ensemble Marsyas.
Brand new group Ensemble Marsyas makes its debut at the Lammermuir Festival on 16th September. The new wind ensemble, which was formed in Scotland's capital city, will perform music by the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), plus works by Handel, Vivaldi and Dowland. The programme highlights the main principals behind the ensemble; virtuosic wind music from the baroque and classical periods.
Ensemble Marsyas will also launch its debut album at the Festival, 'Zelenka Sonatas', which features special guest Monica Huggett. Founder Peter Whelan describes the wind music of Zelenka as 'the equivalent to the Bach solo partitas for violin, with a bit of Paganini thrown in. It is the most spectacularly challenging music for wind, breathtaking in its scale, and utopian in its demands on the players' techniques.' They will perform Sonata V, for 2 oboes, bassoon and continuo as part of their Lammermuir Festival programme.
The concert is held in the ballroom of one of Scotland's most beautiful historic houses, Winton House, Pencaitland, which boasts paintings by Van Dyke, Canaletto, Raeburn, and Ramsay.
