The aria "Se' l mio duol non è si forte" is the great lament of Rodelinda, who believes that her husband Bertarido has died. Lucy Crowe does this in broad lines with gentle sobs, haunting rising and falling of the voice. These are tones of surrender and self-assurance, as if she has surrendered to her fate. This is accompanied by a constantly softly throbbing orchestra with pale bassoon and viola notes and lonely lamenting recorders.
