And Scottish mezzo Karen Cargill was in wonderful voice at the Proms as Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde … Here’s another side to her musicianship, the sensual soundworld of late 19th century French song and this Chaussen’s Chanson Perpetuelle adds a string quartet to a poem where a woman tells us she’s been abandoned and plans to drown herself with more than a hint of Chausson’s Wagnerian symphonies. Cargill has just the right voice to bring out the Wagnerian breadth of the song but also the craft and sensitivity and range of colours to caress Debussy’s Songs of Bilitis, Duparc’s Chanson triste and Belgian composer Joseph Jongen’s nocturnal dreams of love. It’s an attractive programme.
