Dvorak Violin Concerto - Scotland on Sunday
By the late 1870s, Dvorák's reputation was on the upswing: he had changed his compositional style to create highly popular works informed by folksong and regional music, but never bound by it. Four works from this period, with Dvorák in his late 30s, feature in this new recording with the SCO's conductor emeritus Joseph Swensen as conductor and solo violinist. The three-movement Violin Concerto and five-movement Czech Suite both date from 1879. Sterling performances by Swensen and the SCO bring out the lyricism, delicacy and power of Dvorák's writing. Worth hearing.
