Barb Jungr - Just Like a Woman (hymn to Nina) - Uncut

Brave Simone tribute from classy British-based jazz singer.

An LP of Nina Simone songs is an odd concept: these dozen compositions were mostly covers anyway and Simone's interpretations had an idiosyncratic genius that was inimitable. Yet having already delivered albums of Elvis and Dylan covers, Jungr is nothing if not fearless. Sensibly, she doesn't try to imitate Simone's maverick delivery, concentrating instead on sympathetic new arrangements supported by Danny Thompson's fluid bass and Jenny Carr's understated piano. Not all of it works, but at her best Jungr offers a fresh slant on songs such as To Love Somebody.
