Giorgi Gigashvili - Meeting my Shadow - International Piano
His way with Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Variations is tirelessly exuberant, with a special love for the composer’s rough-hewn humour. Yet he is equally sensitive in the oasis of calm of Variations 15 and 16 where there is no lack of poise or inwardness. Elsewhere he relishes the Spanish character of Scarlatti’s C major Sonata Kk487, while he is rapt and confiding in Brahms’s Op 117 Intermezzo’s, alternately devotional and storming in Messiaen’s ‘Le baiser de l’Enfant Jesus’ (from ‘Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jesus’) and – ever versatile – revels in Scriabin, whether in the A flat Waltz’s hallucinatory flight or in the demonic Ninth Sonata. Argerich and Goerner’s belief in Gigashvili’s gifts could hardly be more impressively confirmed.
