Maxim Emelyanychev & SCO - Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 8 - The Times

Emelyanychev knows just how to pull the listener into the first movement’s gloomy landscape, starting from the resinous bass line, building through mellow woodwinds and the nervous, taut strings until the cellos take up the principal melody. As before, Emelyanychev is a master at controlling tension and dynamics, while the players’ reserves of wistful beauty in the slow movement seem endless.
