Purcell: Twelve Sonatas in Three Parts - BBC Radio 3 'Record Review'

Kirsten Gibson chooses five indispensable recordings of BBC Proms composer Henry Purcell.

Andrew McGregor: Lovely playing and recording. I love this music.

Kirsten Gibson: It's absolutely gorgeous, it's so varied as well. In a way these trio sonatas Purcell was writing were really looking back to the mid 17th century italian trio sonatas so you get these little short movements  that are really varied in style and mood and texture and I think Retrospect Trio really bring that out in their playing. They're really good at making those changes between you know these floaty kind of, there's a floaty legato adagio through to that finale there which is full of motion, lightness of touch, just gorgeous.
