Scottish Ensemble - Britten - Classic FM
It's good to hear Clio Gould's Scottish Ensemble putting more of an internationalist spin on these masterpieces and rescuing them from stuffy 'Englishness'. The Frank Bridge Variations has rarely sounded so driven and manic. The Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings too becomes less concerned with outmoded pastoralism and more with locating new meaning within the score. This is 21st-century Britten.
